A fayre to remember

(Now go easy on me… this is my first ever blog, and trust me I am no writer!)

2012 is the year that Liss Infant School decided to get a makeover for their annual May Fayre event, and where better to come! Having an illustration background from greeting card design, I couldn’t wait to get my hands all over it, and turn it into a beautiful piece of design.

The chance to do a community ‘design’ project doesn’t come along every day, and who wouldn’t want to design a local fayre programme? I had visions of pretty bunting, toffee apples and coconut shys!

This design did not take long to come together, being an avid attendee at local craft fayres and events; I knew how it would look from the off.

The idea was for it to resemble (what use to be) a typical hot English summer’s day, with blue skies and fluffy clouds, soft muted tones of bunting streaming from stall to stall, with flowers and handcrafted delights.

My aim was to capture all of this on the front cover, and then follow the rest of the programme with little bits and pieces of things you might find at a fayre, such as raffles, ice cream and a scarecrow or two.

The cover also features a pretty zigzag (I don’t know the technical craft term for this!) edge border, which again carries through the rest of the programme as page markers, and are intended to resemble a child’s clothing label or school book label, you know the ones where you write your name and the subject.

I’m pleased to say the first draft went down with huge success and with a big thumbs up I then rolled out the rest of the design to the whole programme. The programme was soon complete and sent to print, where we then waited with anticipation to see the final thing.

The best part of the process for us is hearing the great feedback and receiving a lovely letter written by the school’s committee, thanking us for our services. That’s what makes it all worthwhile!

Can we help you with a project?
