Why it’s important to spring clean your marketing strategy

Spring has finally sprung, and if you’re anything like me, then it may be that you’ve been thinking about spring cleaning your home.  However, have you thought about spring cleaning your marketing strategy?

There are many benefits of taking stock of your marketing strategy, principally to ensure that it is working in the way that you had hoped.  Be brave when looking at your current marketing strategy, assess whether your objectives may have changed since the strategy was originally put together.  In the current economic climate it is important to consider what marketing activities have delivered results towards these objectives and which have failed to deliver.  Any wasted spend could be reapportioned to activities that have clearly been a worthwhile endeavour for your business.

If you’re looking at your website, consider whether a refresh may be in order to not only make it more appealing to clients in terms of look, feel and navigation but to also to maintain SEO.

It is also important to reassess your marketing strategy to remain proactive in reaching your target market, rather than becoming reactive to situations that arise.  It also means that you won’t miss out on or not be prepared for key events within your industry.  By planning, you can take full advantage of cost efficiencies when it comes to, say, media buying, print buying, exhibiting at conferences and events – if you don’t plan you will often end up spending far more per unit in these examples, or will miss out on early bird booking rates and prime stand locations.

Another consideration is that by not having a plan, you haven’t planned any of the resources required to fulfil these activities and by pulling people or resources in at the last minute, you may find that, counterproductively, other areas of the business (even clients!) may suffer.

Remember, failing to plan is planning to fail!
